Chapter Postings

Southwest Minnesota State University

Our Annual KKCK-FM Takeover was a great success. Members of our NBS chapter had a great experience working with professional radio staff, equipment, and air waves. This fundraiser helps us greatly with our chapter expenses along with helping us with our excellence in broadcasting.

As a chapter, we are planning events for the next couple of months. We are tentatively scheduled to take media tours in Sioux Falls, SD. Planned tours will include radio, TV, and production companies. We are also contacting broadcasting professionals to come and speak at the remaining meetings for this semester along with next fall semester. Our annual NBS Initiation Banquet is also fast approaching. We are busy securing a location, a menu, and speakers. This annual banquet is an exciting event; as we are able to officially welcome our new members. Promoting and pre-production for our SMSU graduation ceremony taping is also moving along nicely. We will attend and have a table at the Graduation Expo to help pre-sell tapes.

Looking into the long-term, we are negotiating with the university's Anime Club to once again document their convention in May. Our chapter has also been approached by SMSU to create a video yearbook for next year. We are actively discussing this project as it will be large undertaking for our group. We feel this project has a lot of potential.

The Southwest Minnesota State NBS chapter has kept quite busy in the past month. We we delighted by the successful Washington D.C. convention which was held in mid March. The members that attended from our chapter had positive reviews of the convention and thought that they were able to gain valuable information and contacts for the future. Our chapter was also honored as a Model Chapter for this year. We are proud of our accomplishments through The National Broadcasting Society.

Our chapter took part in the annual Graduation Expo at SMSU. At the expo, we were able to sell advanced copies of the graduation commencement which is to take place on May 13, 2006. We are also scheduling speakers for the annual SMSU NBS initiation banquet. This banquet is a great opportunity for our chapter to get together and welcome the new members to the chapter. We will be holding the banquet at the end of April.

Once again, we are proud and honored at all of the hard work that went into this years national convention in Washington, D.C. We believe that The National Broadcasting Society is on the right track.

Central Michigan University

For the first time in ages, I won’t start this article with “The CMU chapter of NBS has been keeping very busy,” but we have been!

Our trip to the National Convention in Washington D.C. is the biggest thing we have done lately, of course!  After a twelve-hour, overnight drive, through a blizzard in the mountains, we arrived at the Doubletree.  We’re still confused with why AAA’s directions took us through the Pentagon’s parking lot, but we made it safely, and that’s what’s important.  The fourteen CMU members who attended loved the convention, and felt they got a lot out of it.  Seeing Sam Donaldson and Chris Matthews speak were major highlights, but our best moments really came at the final luncheon.  We won 6 of the 10 production competition categories we were finalists in.  And two of our members, Chrissy Colagiovanni and Pat Brown, were named national Communication Coordinator and national Rookie Member of the Year, respectively.  We arrived back home in mid-Michigan on Sunday night around 8 pm, and were pleased with how well the convention went.  We hope to bring even more members to the convention in Chicago next year.  We are only five hours away for once!

In terms of upcoming events, we are walking in the Relay-for-Life on Saturday and Sunday, April 8-9.  We hope to get as many members walking as possible, and are working hard to raise money for this great event.  The end of the school year is only a month away, and we elected a new E-Board just before the trip to D.C.  They have started shadowing the positions they hope to take over, and will be key in organizing the Regional Convention we are hosting next year. Patrick Brown will be the new President, leading an almost all-new E-Board.  (Eight of our current eleven members are graduating in May!)

The past four years have been great ones, after getting involved with NBS first semester of my freshman year.  Thanks for all the great memories everyone!  I’ll see you all in the “real world!”

Kutztown University

The Kutztown University Chapter has been very busy with NBS Activities. We've had new officers this year, and we have been working on lots of things that we've been lacking on in the past.

We held an Induction ceremony on February 24th, and brought 13 new members into our chapter! It was one of our biggest Spring Induction ceremonies ever! Bill Bova, of PCN (the Pennsylvania Cable Network) was our speaker, and we all went out to eat with our families after the ceremony was over. It was a great welcoming night.

We also participated in numerous community service activities in
the past months. On February 25th-26th we worked with WYLN-35 in Hazleton at an American Cancer Society telethon. We were able to run cameras, floor direct, and help the station out with whatever they needed during the weekend. Then on March 5th we worked at PBS 39 in Bethlehem, PA and helped answer phones for their phone-a-thon. They gave us a tour of the facilities, and we had fun and learned a little too! We've also been planning with the Schuykill Valley Relay For Life in May to make a promotional video for their event. We've been attending meetings for planning, and have plans to tape some events prior to the actual Relay and to have cameras there for the actual event. It's a great community service project that we've got in the works.

The best thing that the KU NBS did was attend the National Convention in Washington DC! We had 15 members at the capitol and we all had a blast! We are very excited to have Gina Gasper on the Student Advisory Council of NBS, and were pleased to meet many new friends from chapters all across the country. Everyone got something valuable out of the convention and we had a blast.

We're planning to do lots of things in the next few months before school ends like attending Millersville's Comm Prom and organizing some events of our own.

University of Cincinnati

As spring comes upon us it brings many changes to our chapter of NBS here at the University of Cincinnati.  Shortly before we left for the national convention in Washington D.C. our current president, Dave Cristante, graduated from our program and was replaced by our former secretary, Christy Crawford, who has demonstrated great responsibility, organization and enthusiasm in her role and we know she will continue to take our chapter far.  The changes continue with new officer elections being held early in April to decide who will take over the important governing positions for next year.

Our chapter had a wonderful time at the national convention, getting to hear speakers such as Chris Matthews and Sam Donaldson was truly awe inspiring and several of our members also found time to explore the city’s museums and monuments.  We were honored to once again receive the model chapter award and also very honored that two of our members, Andy Young and Brian McMahon were able to walk away with national production competition awards for video entertainment program and video comedy segment.  A congrats to all the winners and nominees.

We look forward to a fun, exciting and productive spring quarter that starts off with an all college 48 hour film challenge, a competition that gives teams of students from local schools one weekend to write shoot and edit a short film.  Our chapter has already committed to entering three teams into the competition.  Hope everyone enjoyed DC as much as we did and we look forward to meeting everyone again in Chicago.

Millersville University

The spring semester is in full swing for the Millersville chapter.  Our chapter held an induction ceremony, did fundraising, began preparing a community service project and preparing for a high school video contest, started the preparation for our Communication major prom event (Comm Prom), and we just got home from the National Convention

We held our induction ceremony on Thursday February 2nd.  The ceremony was held in our television studio.  Eight new members were inducted into NBS.  The new members were Lauren Cook, Kelly Early, Allison Hengst, Katie Mack, Terry Christopher, Tom Gorman, Greg Jones, and Matthew Majewski.  We had alumni Mitch Groff as our guest speaker.  All new members signed the official member’s book and received certificates as part of the induction.

This month has also been full of fundraising.  We had two main fundraising adventures going on throughout the month.  There was a table set up at many Millersville University Men’s and Women’s basketball games where we sold rally towels embroidered with the Millersville name.  We also had a chocolate rose for Valentines Day.  There were five different colors of roses which made for a nice arrangement.

The Millersville University chapter of NBS is currently in the process of planning for three big events.  The first is our high school video festival.  This festival has been growing in popularity with local area high schools.  This year four area high schools will be attending.  At the festival there will be an on-the-spot video competition, and an awards ceremony for the work that the students submitted to us for judging.

Millersville’s chapter of NBS is beginning to be involved with a community service project entitled, “Sunflower Children”.  This is a project set up by Millersville University and Brittany’s Hope Foundation.  It will supply orphans of third world countries with necessary supplies for them to begin their new life outside of the orphanage.

Our 3rd annual Comm Prom is just around the corner.  Last year we had over 60 students in attendance and we are hoping for many more this year.  The theme of our prom is “An Evening in Paris”.  There will be a Comm Prom court, with nominations for the court starting at the beginning of April.  The night of Comm Prom voting will be held for a king and queen.  The prices are five dollars a couple and three dollars a person.

The National Convention has come and gone.  It was an exciting and educational experience.  As a chapter, we are very appreciative of the recognition our chapter received.  At the National Convention we received eight grants and awards overall.

Grant Winners:

Linda Do – Sherman Lawton Grant

Kristi Fulkerson – Robert Hyland Grant

Award Winners:

Matthew Majewski – Rookie member of the year

Priscilla Marino – Alumni Coordinator of the year

We would like to thank NBS for holding such an exceptional convention, all of our members took home a lot of new information.  Millersville University looks forward to informing you of our activity in the following issues of signals.  Take care.

Ohio Northern University

The past several months have not only been productive, but also exciting for the Ohio Northern University Chapter of NBS. The fun ranges all the way from electing new officers and preparing for our biggest fundraiser of the year, to sending seven chapter members to National Convention.

As a part of our activities, we took time to compete and defeat the Ohio Northern chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America, in an annual friendly game of bowling.

Several NBS members traveled to Toledo, Ohio and toured WTOL, a CBS affiliate. We got an enthralling one on one personal tour and sit-down discussion with Jerry Anderson, a morning and evening news anchor. We were also able to sit in on the five o’clock newscast right in the studio and engaged in conversation with on-air talent during the breaks. And when not busy taking tours we conducted our annual Superbowl football raffle; raising funds for the chapter.

Ohio Northern sent one by air and six by land to Washington D.C. for the NBS National Convention. Those seven chapter representatives absorbed anything and everything in the nation’s capital about broadcast media. Several members attended the taping of CNN’s “On the Story” with a couple individuals getting to ask questions on the nationally aired program. We’ve taken the excitement and experiences from convention and are now carrying it over into the preparation for our biggest fundraiser of the year in our third annual Miss ONU pageant. We’ve divided the chapter into committees to efficiently prepare for the pageant as we are all equally eager to put on successful show and earn funds for next year’s convention in the windy city. Our members are all excited for this Spring quarter and some warmer weather!!

University of Florida

They say that time flies when you're having fun and that is no lie. The Florida delegation enjoyed their spring break to the fullest this year by spending it in Washington D.C. with some of the best people from around the nation. It was a great convention with lots of networking and a lot of great new friends made.
Thanks to everyone involved and all those who attended for making it amazing. Now our chapter must look to the future as we plan to say farewell to our superb seniors and welcome in new leadership to hopefully raise our chapter to an even higher level. We look forward to the future and can't wait until Chicago '07. See you all there.

Troy University

The National Convention in Washington, DC was a delight for the Troy

University NBS chapter.  Students Daniel Curtis, Josh Gauntt,  Anna Hasenbein, Christie Hegwood, Lindsay Johnson, Erica Proffer, Jonathan Sellers, and Jessica Weaver and advisor Dr. Jeff Spurlock attended the week-long conference.  The Troy chapter came home with a Model Chapter Award and with the Most Improved Chapter of the Year

Award.  We proudly have those plaques hanging on the wall in the Hall School of Journalism.

Also, the Troy chapter elected a new president and vice president for the 2006-07 school year.  They are:  Mark Vaughn (president) and Josh Gauntt (vice president).
